An Avatar Legends: The Roleplay Game RPG Published by Magpie Games

Pretext
The world of Avatar has a cast of recognizable and wonderful characters. If you’re seeing this, you likely know a great deal of them. Which is why we will, largely, not be using them. Their stories have already been written and we will be using an alternative universe to play with different consequences. That is why, with some small exceptions such as Fire Lord Sozin, you will not see anyone you recognize.
Since there will not be an Avatar Aang, the future of the world is uncertain. Nothing is promised, and there is everything to lose.
This story is about the people who are left to pick up the pieces. Civilians who want to live their lives in solitude. When the people in charge cannot, or will not, stand up for us… Who will?
The avatar is dead
Growing up, I was told stories of the four nations before everything happened. It was a time of peace and prosperity for many years, with the Avatar left to keep the balance between the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads.
But that all changed when the Avatar, master of all four elements, vanished without a trace.
If Kayo is dead, then that means the next Avatar will be an Air Nomad. We should have known who the Avatar was by now, but the arrival of a spirit has caused a headache for the monks.
Avatar selection has been complicated. There’s only one, but until the spirit’s interference is overcome, 13 airbenders have been chosen as potential successors. There isn’t much we can do but wait.
The Air Nomads themselves have been under increasing pressure over the years.
From one of their elders being implicated in the death of the Fire Lord’s sister, to the punishment of the alleged killer, and their recently increased global presence.
And the Fire Nation hasn’t been kind to them either in the propaganda they produce by the boatload.
The Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes have had their heads buried in the sand so deep that they have barely noticed things change. They’ve been focusing on their own rivalries and the danger each other poses.
But luckily, nothing catastrophic has happened yet.
Right now, the era of peace holds fast. Now is a time for kids to be kids, and worries to come later. I only hope that it remains this way for many years to come.
This is where our campaign begins

The state of four nations
The world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is divided into four great nations: The Earth Kingdom, Water Tribes, Air Nomads, and Fire Nation. Many people are gifted with the ability to “bend” or control an element around them using martial arts perfected through rigorous training.
Only one person has the ability to bend all four elements: The Avatar, who functions as the bridge between the material and spirit worlds and the keeper of balance. Unfortunately, he has gone missing and is presumed dead.
The Four Nations now grapple with life without an overarching authority, forcing them to coexist. Over the last several years, it is rumored that the Fire Nation has been working on something behind closed doors. The Air Nomads have become increasingly mistrusted across all of the Four Nations due to their involvement in the death and non-punishment of Fire Princess Zeissan’s killer. The Water Tribes are drifting ever more and more apart. And the Earth Kingdom is reforming its entire political structure seemingly overnight with no word from the king.
We will be following the people who are left over: civilians, ex-nobles, and victims of what will undoubtedly culminate in the reign of fire.

Caine
The Adamant
The Sandbenders of the Earth Kingdom are all seen as savages. Punks who rob the isolated of their belongings and pawn them to parts unknown. But what many people don’t understand is the symbiotic relationship between their tribes and the spirits that live in the Si Wong Desert. Caine has always been proud of this distinction but is very aware of his family’s reputation.
It isn’t desirable to live as bandits and ruffians. There had to be somewhere safe for the sandbenders where they could maintain their culture and grow as people, not perceived cutthroats.
Caine chose to leave his family behind in search of a better life. He wants to bring them somewhere they can thrive. Luckily, there are plenty of places to call home. Caine has set his sights on Ember Island. The Fire Nation has been welcoming to Earth Kingdom travelers. This trip should be an easy one.

Taemon
The Rogue
A Fire Nation noble's life is mired in scrutiny and presentation. The people in cushy palaces and high status did not get there without being opportunists. This means that, even when a family is in hard times, it isn’t always common knowledge. Taemon is aware of his family’s precarious status as nobles and their dangerous potential to fall into disgrace.
He lost his mother at an early age and, with it, the spark that fueled his firebending. His father is presumed dead. His sister, the rising star of his small family, will no longer talk to him. He struggles with maintaining the familial image demanded of him as the next in line. But he dreams of running away and living free.
His next expedition will likely be far away from the Fire Nation, with no intent on turning back. The worry is: Will it chase after him?

Tempest
The Idealist
An airbender who grew up less-than-traditionally. Where all of his peers were raised by the monks, Tempest always knew who his father was. And he was given special treatment as a result of it. Despite the monk’s disapproval, this airbender had a father. Early in his life, he was fortunate to be considered an “Avatar Hopeful.” Due to a spirit’s interference, it is unknown if Tempest is the next Avatar, but he would train as one.
He has found himself increasingly alone in the days leading up to Sozin’s comet. His father all but abandoned him so that he might realize his abilities as a potential Avatar, his friends thinning with distance, and his very mentor training him with disdain. In the grand scheme of things, this is only a phase in his life. There will be time to grow into something better.
Won’t there?

Xu-Shi
The Pillar
In the Earth Kingdom, life is rarely easy. The monarchy has not been of substantial help to its people over the years, and those who live outside the walls of Ba-Sing-Se must be strong and persistent to survive.
Xu-Shi is the pride of his family, using his earthbending to knead the rock into soil to help the crops grow. It is a simple life but a fulfilling one.
But something has called out to him. A feeling has overtaken him that cannot be shaken. In his dreams, he sees the horizon: The call to adventure. To see the world. He has left his family under his sibling’s care to go see where this nagging feeling is and what has caused it. he hopes to return to where he came from. But, like a lot of change, there may be no going back.

Yuka
The Icon
The Dragon of the East’s son has been through extensive training in service of his clan. He has a large family. Multiple siblings of note, each a prodigy in their own right, a strong mother, and a father who serves as a highly decorated general.
But the actual story is a lot more uneasy.
Yuka struggles to survive in his increasingly hostile home life, often being compared to his older sister, who ran away when she had the chance. His other siblings treat him poorly, his father pushes him too far, and his mother is nearly helpless to give him any aid.
The winds are changing for young Yuka. There’s something big on the horizon, and he doesn’t want to be a part of it. While his heart may tell him to stay away, he wonders if he’ll have a choice at all.
